Dental Crowns and Bridges

Dental crowns and bridges are effective solutions for restoring damaged or missing teeth. Whether you have a tooth that is weakened, cracked or missing altogether, dental crowns and bridges provide durable and natural looking restorations that can rejuvenate your smile and improve your oral health.

Understanding Dental Crowns and Bridges

A dental crown, also called a dental cap, is a custom made restoration that completely covers a damaged tooth, restoring its shape, size, strength and appearance. Crowns are commonly used in cases where a tooth is severely decayed, fractures, or weakened due to root canal therapy. They can also be used to improve the aesthetics of a tooth with severe discoloration or irregular shape.

Dental bridges are restorations used to replace one or more missing teeth. They consist of artificial teeth called pontics, which are anchored in place by dental crowns placed on the adjacent teeth. Bridges not only fill the gap left by missing teeth but also prevent the remaining teeth from shifting out of position.

The benefits of Dental Crowns and Bridges:

Choosing dental crowns and for your dental needs offers several significant advantages:

  1. Restoration of Function: Dental crowns and bridges provide strength and support to weakened or damaged teeth, allowing you to bite and chew comfortably. They restore the function of the tooth, enabling you to enjoy a varied diet without limitations.
  2. Aesthetics: Crowns are custom designed to match the size, shape and color of natural teeth, providing a seamless and natural appearance. Bridges fill the gaps left by missing teeth, enhancing the aesthetics of your smile. They can significantly improve the aesthetics of your smile by concealing dental imperfections and enhancing symmetry.
  3. Preserved Facial Structure: Dental crowns act as a protective barrier, covering and sealing the underlying tooth structure which helps to prevent further damage from decay or facture, prolonging the lifespan of the treated tooth.
  4. Durability: Crowns made from high quality materials such as porcelain, porcelain-fused-to-metal, or zirconia which are known for their strength and durability. With proper care and maintenance, dental crowns can last for many years, providing long term functional and cosmetic benefits.

The dental crown placement process:

The process of receiving a dental crown typically involves the following steps:

  1. Evaluation and treatment planning: During your initial visit, we will evaluate your oral health, discuss your concerns, and determine if a dental crown is the right solution for you. X rays will be taken to assess the condition of the tooth and surrounding structures.
  2. Tooth preparation: The affected tooth will be prepared by removing a small amount of the outer tooth structure to accommodate the crown. This ensures a proper fit and allows space for the dental crown. In case of dental bridges, the teeth adjacent to the missing tooth are prepared by removing some amount of tooth structure to accommodate the dental crown that will support the bridge.
  3. Impressions: An impression of the prepared teeth will be made to make a custom made crown. We use 3Shape intra oral scanners which avoid the need of making impressions with trays in your mouth and are a lot more comfortable and precise. We have an in-house laboratory where our skilled technicians fabricate crowns within minutes which will avoid multiple visits for you and make the entire process very smooth.
  4. Temporary crown: In cases where there needs to be a gap between treatment, a temporary crown is made, which will be placed over your prepared teeth to protect it and maintain aesthetics and function.
  5. Final placement: Once your permanent crown is ready, you will return for a second visit. The temporary crown will be removed, and the final crown will be carefully fitted, adjusted and cemented onto the prepared tooth.
  6. Final adjustments: Our dentist will evaluate the fit, bite alignment, and aesthetics of the crown. Any necessary adjustments will be made to ensure optimal comfort and functionality.
